A Frame With a Purpose

I have a cute frame.

Andrea gave it to one of my girls at their baby shower. For some reason I haven't taken the time to put a picture in it (I know, some photographer, right?), so for two to five years it's sat empty. I found it in a box.

I put it on my shelf to remind me to insert the perfect picture.

That was three weeks ago. There it sits telling the world a mysterious someone is wonderfully made.

Then it hit me. Could this frame be a metaphor for who I am as a parent?

Do I know the truth that my children are wonderfully made in the likeness of God, but for two years the message sits empty on my shelf? Have I failed to daily convey value to God's mini trophies?

You see, if I forget to transfer this essential message, then I will raise fearful children, who become peer pleasing teens, who become insecure adults with a lack of value and purpose.

As children, little girls never doubt that they are princesses (complete with peanut butter on the chin).

And Boys? Of course they are superheroes!

As life battles to destroy our children's value, we, as parents, must daily fight with purpose to preserve it! They are princesses and superheroes, and they are meant for greater purpose.

Today I will fill my frame and declare to my children, "YOU are wonderfully made".

"For I know the plans for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11

Snack to Ten

Last night while laying in bed, I came up with this snack counting activity. For snack time, we used a number line I typed up to practice counting to ten. There are tons of different things you can do to adapt the activity to your child's level. I made the sheet available if you would like to try it with your preschooler. You can download it here.

Charis (nearly 5): We would put five on the number line and then I would ask how many she would have if she added 3 more, etc. Then we did the same thing with subtraction.

Porter (age 3): Counted up to ten, and as he ate each number counted backwards.

Hunter (age 2): She practiced putting just one snack in each box.

Brouck & Janie Are Married

A few months ago I had the privilege of taking Brouck and Janie's engagement session. It is always so much fun shooting couples in love. This past weekend I shot their intimate wedding. I don't think I've shot a wedding yet where we've been on time let alone ahead of schedule! Janie was so organized and laidback, so the day flowed with ease and joy.

Janie, you were an amazing bride. I pray many joyful years of marriage for you and Brouck!

Sometimes because I'm always focusing on new love I miss the love that has lasted through the years. As I looked through the day's pictures I paused at this image. It spoke volumes to me. There is something to be said about the years of life under the belt of a married couple. Looking into their eyes gives me a deeper respect of love. True love runs deep and it runs long. May we all experience the refreshing waters of a lifelong love.

I love the smiles.

Hunter Turns 2 Today

My little munchkin was our baby for nearly 2 years and she learned very quickly how to capitalize on that privilege. Even though her title has been trumped, I have a feeling she will not release her baby charm any time soon.

Christian Rocks His First Photoshoot

Natalie + Sean E-session

When I sat down with Natalie to discuss her and Sean's engagement session, she told me that they loved happy pictures. Well, I must say it may have something to do with the fact that this couple is so happy. I never once had to ask them to smile or look like they like each other (yes, those words have come out of my mouth).

Sean and Natalie are residents at local hospitals transplanted from Kentucky, and I have a theory that once you arrive at St. Louis you can never leave. Something along the lines of Hotel California. So, welcome to St. Louis guys! :)

They thought it would be fun to incorporate some St. Louis landmarks into their shoot.

Megan & Seth Are Married

This Labor day weekend was filled with much love as Megan and Seth were married at Camp Wartburg in Waterloo, IL. They couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day for their amazing ceremony. I enjoyed capturing their wonderful day.

Seth's amazing story is that he learned to sail, just so he could propose to Megan on a sailboat. Cool points for Seth!

Chase is One

A Bittersweet Day

Today is a bittersweet day.

Patches, the most gracious guest, is going home to Class 109 today. It makes us all (well, almost all of us) sad to see him go. You are always welcome at the Craig household, Patches.

And still our gloomy thoughts are quickly lit by the fact that Charis gets to wear her new Dora light up shoes for the first time to school today. A special Aunt R was compelled to bless Charis with these amazing shoes. I'm telling you, just watching these shoes twinkle will brighten any dampened spirit. Maybe I should put in my request for a pair.

Thank you, Aunt R, for taking the time to make a little girl's month!

Now off to vacuum random poop pellets, Patches thank you gifts.

Caleb Senior 2011 Teaser

Had so much fun tromping through the overgrown brush for Caleb's senior photoshoot. I was excited to ride out into the field in Caleb's VW bus, but when it stalled half way through the overgrowth, I was a bit worried about making it back to civilization. Luckly, he was able bounce us along through the field with the bus tied to the back of a four-wheeler.

Along with his talent of towing buses, Caleb is an amazing musician. In fact, he's applying for Berklee College of Music in Boston. Good Luck, Caleb!

Chronicles of A Weekend Guest

Charis, you see, is the ultimate animal lover. I, on the other hand, am the child who punched our family cat in the eye and for two days Daisy walked around with her eye closed shut. Needless to say, Charis has been asking for a pet, any kind of pet, for months now.

Do you know how ecstatic I was to find out Class 109 comes equipped with it's own pet?!

Patches is an essential member of Charis' preschool class and because we're such cool parents we agreed to allow Patches to come visit our home first this year.

Patches smells raunchy, poops everywhere and sheds profusely. Every mother's dream pet. While we were taking turns holding the little guy, daddy got the best idea to see what would happen if we set him down on the carpet.

Well, we found out under the couch is his favorite place. In his little note that came with him he said he loves apples. As you can see, he lied to us.

Here's a delicious apple waiting for Patches to come get. And where's Patches?? Under the couch laughing at us.

After a half hour of chasing him around the house we got smart. We locked the squealing kids in their bedroom and a grown man and a large pregnant mommy proceeded to roll around on the floor until we pinned and squished a pint size rodent between us. It was not a pretty sight.

I'm happy to say, Patches survived his first day at the Craig household.

It's Already Started

After picking up Charis from her first day EVER of preschool, I was excited to hear all the wonderful things she did that day. Strangely, I was met with a solemn child and after a few questions I was told, "I don't want to tell you anything".

Ok. I can empathize. She's had a big day and I'll give her space and allow her to process this eventful day. After a few minutes of driving, she was ready to share her day, "Mommy, I need new tennis shoes. Mine are ugly and scratched. Everyone has pretty new tennis shoes. I need Dora light-up shoes".

Are you kidding me? Charis' first memory of school is that her mother had the audacity to send her to the first day of school with old tennis shoes on!?

And now I get to spend the rest of the year keeping up with the Jones' kids?

Nice.

Butterflies and Babies

As we prepare for the opening of our new studio this October, we've done quite a bit of soul searching concerning the future of our business.

1) Matt has come on as a more prominent addition to all the happenings at Charity Lynn. That's not to say he hasn't been a huge part up to this point. In fact, he's been my biggest fan and wouldn't let me throw in the towel all 11, 264 times. So, you'll be seeing him around a lot more. (hint, hint...we're working on brining on a couple of other people too!)

2) Babies, babies, babies! Tis' the season for babies. Well, at least in our family, anyway. Until now we've focused on weddings and fresh new love, but now we're going to expand to celebrate the seasons of childhood. (The new website is almost done!)

3) In an industry saturated with amazing photographers, it's time we set ourselves apart from the rest of the pack. Our vision is no longer to create amazing images, but to create timeless art. We will deliver framed work ready to hang on your wall that will not only establish stunning decor for your home, but art unique to your family.

4) We are all about you. You are why we are doing this, so we're going to take the time to get it right, just for YOU.

Have You Kissed Your Hero Today?

Remember when you we're dating the man of your dreams? Remember how your face lit up when he walked into the room? Or how just hearing his voice over the phone would send you head spinning? Remember how he made you feel like there was no other woman alive?

Now it's been two years of marriage and the smells that emulate from him are not natural. His dresser? Oh, that's the pile of clothes next to the bed. It's no secret that relationships - all relationships - are difficult to be successful, most of all a marriage relationship. I mean, everyday you're with that person & everyday you see that person's true colors.

So what happened between the pre and post "I do"? Did he turn into a different person? How did our marriage turn into a verbal boxing match? In the book, Finding the Hero in Your Husband, Julianna Slattery talks about how every man wants one thing. To be someone's hero. Can you believe that just about everything falls second to this desire?

Could it be that our focus changed? No longer does he light up my room when he walks in. No longer can he send my head spinning when he calls. Instead I'd rather tell my girlfriends everything he does wrong.

For the next few weeks, focus on all the wonder things that first took your breath away. Find small things he does and sincerely voice your appreciation. Let him know you love it when he helps with the kids or when he offers to make dinner. Think of ways to brag to other people about him...in his ear shot.

Try it. You may be surprised at who walks through the door.

A Life Moment

As I worked, I absentmindedly heard the prattle of Charis behind me. After awhile I couldn't take the constant questions and chatter, so I turned to scold her when I looked into the face of innocence and quickly remembered this moment will pass too quickly & I'm sure one day I'll long to hear her 4 year old conversation again. I quickly grabbed my camera and captured this moment to remind me of the important things in life.

Single Moms (and Dads) Rock!

A few weeks ago, as a frustrated mom, I huffed out of the house leaving my three fussing children with my amazing husband. That's when it hit me that there are thousands of moms (and dads) who face this incredible task without the loving support of a spouse. Daily they forge forward giving every bit of their energy to raise their beautiful children to adulthood and many times without enough time for themselves. I know how difficult just being a parent can be, so I wanted to take some time out to give honor where honor is due.

Take some time out today to thank a single mom for all her daily sacrifices.

Preschool and Fruit Loop Rainbows.

I remember preschool. I remember the day I threw up my hot dog on my teacher's arm. Well, today I registered my Charis for preschool, so now she'll be making memories of her own.

As a huge homeschool advocate, I never dreamed that I would be taking this step, but I couldn't be more pleased with this decision that Matt and I have made. So it seems now our school plans have taken on a more hybrid element.

To celebrate, I bought Fruit Loops and we made rainbows. Hunter did have two purples on her rainbow, but the temptation was too great, she ate the other one, glue and all!

JCA is Impacting Local Schools!

I'm so excited to get to photograph some amazing people who are making a difference in their world!

Jacob Charitable Alliance is making a huge impact on local schools with their character building programs. This non-profit organization has an amazing team who goes into public schools with a voice speaking worth and significance into the lives of middle and high school students.

Tara Bollinger-Jacob co-founded JCA, along with her husband, with the vision to impact the next generation, and that is just what they are doing!

Their website is under construction, so I'll be sure to pass it on when it's up and running, so you can see for yourself just how awesome this programs is!

Parenting Plus a Business??

Being a parent is one of the most important callings a person can accept in their life. In fact, I've spent the past 4 1/2 years striving to learn everything I can about being a better parent. I don't claim to know it all, but just like most mommies, I'm doing the best of my ability.

Lately, my role as a mommy has taken a new dimension. It's a role that thousands of women juggle everyday. How do I manage my family. plus run a successful business/ministry/job/career? My fledgling photography business (that's been more of a hobby) is taking a much more serious capacity that will require more of my time. It's not as if parenting isn't one of the hardest things to do anyway, but to add another outside element will only take more determination and grace of God!

If anyone's read about the Proverbs 31 woman, we all know she is a woman of many hats and still her children rise up and call her blessed. So it can be done!

Erin & David are Married!

I have a special place in my heart for small intimate weddings, because that is exactly what Matt & I did when we got married. We booked a bed & breakfast two hours away in the middle of nowhere and with just our family and closest friends we entered into a sacred commitment. No hype, no drama, just love.

So when I booked Erin & David's intimate wedding I was excited to share in their special day. It was perfect weather in Old St. Charles as the couple was all smiles and laughs as they made a lifelong commitment to one another surrounded by their families.

The End is Now

Sitting in the hospital surrounded by blue and teddy bears, I couldn’t imagine why anyone wouldn’t want a dozen of these amazing bundles of joy.

Then, fast forward two years…“NO!” “I will NOT!”

As I stand staring at my bright-eyed angel flailing about on the floor in a fit of passion, I’m baffled how it all came down to this. What happened to the coos and cuddles? When did the giggles and drool turn into willful defiance and stubborn disobedience?

Lost in the daily routine of “making it through the day”, I missed the bigger picture. I have a mission to send a responsible citizen into the world to fight for justice with moral character and a purpose higher than himself.

So how does my wild, undisciplined toddler become that solid, world-changing adult?

It starts today. I must manage everyday with the end in sight.

Who do I want my little man to be? What kind of character do I want him to have the day he walks out of my care?

Do I want him to stand for truth? Then starting today I must demonstrate truth in everything I do. No longer is it good enough to parent the behavior. I need to parent the heart.

Seek out those who have gone down this road before us. Educate yourself on child development and become passionate about raising the next generation. The worst thing you can do for your heritage is to “wing it”.

Be encouraged and master each day, for the end is now.

An Impromptu Shoot and Marital Tension

So, last night on some crazy whim Matt set up all our studio lighting in our living room and proceeded to have an impromptu photo shoot with our good friend, Joanne. We promised to give Jo more warning for her next shoot.

A funny little thing transpired during this event - marital tension. My role as the background holder was not working for me or anyone else. I had too much to say and I guess I was complaining too much about my arms getting tired.

Now switch places. Matt was just as an opinionated background holder as I was. I think at one point Joanne started singing "Kumbaya". I'm just glad we have friends we feel comfortable enough around to be ourselves. Well, finally after a few minutes of cherished and loving dialogue we turned out some stunning images of Joanne.

Isn't life fun? I think so.

On Valentine's Day 2008, Matt and I had a big love surprise. We were pregnant with our third child in 3 years! Never in a million years could we have expected our Hunter Lily and all the fun she would bring our family. Sometimes it's those unplanned surprises that bring us such great joy!

Are You Coffee?

We all want to make a difference in our world. I think it's wired into our DNA. Because of disappointments and hurts we believe it's not possible, but it is...you just have to be willing to make it happen.

Here's an email I received from Klemmer & Associates. Hope it inspires you to live your dreams of making a difference in your world.

"What are you most like: a carrot, an egg, or coffee?

A carrot starts out firm, but when you put a carrot in boiling water it becomes limp. An egg starts out with a hard shell and is soft in the middle, but place it in boiling water and the inside becomes hard. And when you put coffee in boiling water, it changes the water completely.

What challenges have you been experiencing in your career, family life, physically or spiritually? Think of any of those situations as the boiling water.

Some people are like carrots. Oh, they act tough enough, but the challenges of life soften them, they wilt and won't stand up for themselves any more.

Other people are like eggs. As they confront challenges they get hard on the inside. They're calloused, they become unable or unwilling to feel and do not allow themselves to connect and relate with other people.

Leaders are like coffee. When thrust into the challenges of life they actually change the situation.

A Morning in Sodor

This morning, still in our pajamas, I decided to enjoy some time playing with Porter in his imaginary world of Sodor. For Christmas, his Grampy made him a train table to contain his plethora of Thomas and Friends. Once order was restored to the island a sweet sing song voice began to emerge as Porter fell deeper and deeper into the world of his imagination. Before long his sister joined in bringing her Littlest Pet Shop animals to join the fun and I was quickly forgotten. I stole away to grab my camera and took a few shots of their morning play.

Are You Committed?

I read somewhere, “Many people look forward to the new year for a new start on old habits.” I know every year I take the time to reflect on the year past & hope for the future. I realize my failures and I make promises to myself with a twinge of guilt. I know myself. I know another year has gone by with the extra 10 pounds of baby weight. I know I still leave the laundry sitting in the baskets for days. Last year’s resolutions? February they were shoved in a drawer (the one on my list to clean), forgotten. Why do I even bother?

Yet, here is another new year. Here’s another fresh start. Maybe this year will be different. As I meditate on 2009, and when I say meditate, I really mean in between cleaning spilt chocolate milk, breaking up a squabble, administering a Hello Kitty Band-Aid, scrubbing out black marker from our bedding, and fixing lunch I mentally sort through rambling thoughts of this past year.

What have I learned from this past year? Lately, I’ve been reading the best book by Brian Klemmer, The Compassionate Samurai. It talks about being extraordinary in an ordinary world. In the book he talks about the history of the samurai warrior. They lived by a strict code of values. In fact, there are 10 codes: commitment, personal responsibility, contribution, focus, honesty, honor, trust, abundance, boldness, and knowledge. In essence their lives were full of purpose & their commitment to themselves and others allowed them to live a life of value and fulfillment.

Klemmer states, “Commit to things that are meaningful to you because you were born to make a difference in life. They only way you’ll ever see that coming to pass is when you start to make commitments”.

Where does that leave me with this New Year looming in front of me? Where do I start?

Commitment. That’s my resolution.

Committed to God. Committed to family. Committed to myself. Committed to my future. Committed to friends. Committed to the things that matter.

You were made to make a difference. Are you committed?

Should We See Each Other Before the Wedding??

The holidays are traditionally a time for love and family. From that love engagements result. Newly betrothed couples start the new year with excitement and anticipation for their up coming wedding. Immediately the girl breaks out her three ring binder with clippings from the past 8 years of dresses, flowers and cakes. Inevitably the question comes up,

SHOULD WE SEE EACH OTHER BEFORE THE WEDDING??

This is such a sacred cow that many couples have a hard time killing. Well, an incredible photographer from Southern California, Jasmine Star, was approached by Glamour.com to share her experience with couples seeing each other before the wedding. Since I have not been asked by Glamour to write any articles, I thought I would share her article with you. Hope this helps.

The Best Italian Dressing Ever!

I have to share my love for Ken's Steakhouse Lite Northern Italian Dressing. I am so in love it. Don't get just the regular Italian; make sure it's the Lite Northern. Lately I've been eating it with a fresh spinach salad and chicken breast. Since it's made me so happy lately I thought I would pass it on to you.
Includes:
1 boneless chicken breast covered in Greek Seasoning from Old Town Spice Shoppe
2 cups fresh spinach
2 Tblsp of my favorite Ken's Steakhouse Italian dressing.

I cook the chicken breast for about 6-8 minutes on my George Foreman. Cut it into bit size pieces. Add to my fresh spinach and dressing for one of the yummiest meals. I've eaten it just about everyday for a week. You should try it. I think it has about 200 calories!

Lori braved one of the coldest days ever to have her maternity shoot. She is so cute and fun to shoot. They decided not to find out if it's a boy or a girl. This is something I've never been able to do, but I do think it's so romantic. I can't wait to meet the addition to your adorable family.

Hunter Lily is One!!

I promise, yesterday I was sitting in the hospital bed laughing and joking with Matt minutes before Hunter was born, and now she's one.

She is our bundle of personality. Her favorite pass time is to grab your face and laugh as you yelp in pain. She refuses to walk & loves to lay her head on your shoulder. Do not tell her "no", because she will grunt at you and throw herself forward on the floor.

We love her so much & we're so thankful for our little surprise!

I have to say having an amazing family is one of the best things in life, and it is equally amazing when you marry into such a family. It doubles your love (well, in my case it quadrupled it). A Little Catching Up

So, I've been settling in to our new home, having birthday parties, cleaning up poop, doing dishes, laundry & Bible reading. Just a normal thing here in the Craig house. I guess I'll call this my recap blog.
We had Hunter dedicated to God our last service in Rantoul. She's our IL baby, so they wanted to give her a small parting gift.

Hunter also had her acting debut as baby Jesus at the Christmas eve service in Rantoul. She was a natural.

This is the only formal pictures I took of my kids this Christmas. I sat them up on the platform after church and tried to get them to smile. Hey, it's harder than it looks to get three kids to smile.

Charis did ham it up for this shot. Don't be fooled, she's NEVER this gentle with Hunter.

So, only five days after I had baby Hunter I ventured out to shoot Jim & Theresa's wedding. It was borderline insane, I know, but I felt great & had a blast capturing their day. Other than the cold, cold wind it was a beautiful day. Congratulations guys!

This weekend our friend, Steph Schultz, from St. Louis came to visit us. We had such a good time. Between a Stampin' Up party, Family Swim Night at the local pool, a BBQ & a day trip to Chicago, we kept Steph running wild. This weekend was fire, for sure.

Porter fell back in a lounge chair at the BBQ & split his gums and fattened his lip. Blood was gushing everywhere & I thought for sure he lost a tooth. I have a feeling this will be one of many...being he was climbing on the chair 10 minutes later.

Some friends of ours invited us out on their boat. Charis & Porter took some getting used to the idea, but after awhile the crying stopped and we all had a good time.
Matt was the pro of the group. He was up with the first try.

Charis kept saying, "I want to go home now", but I think over all she had a good time.

Ok, I always thought I was an adventurous person. Well, not when it comes to tubing. I was done in approx. 4 minutes & Matt said we never got over 11 mph. That's all I needed to satisfy my thirst for thrill.

Porter found his spot & never left it. Why? He was quite the stuff honking the horn.

Charis got brave & sat on the back of the boat. She refused to get in the water though.

Parenting tip: A friend of mine, Christy, introduced me to this amazing parenting tid bit. Reuse old plastic grocery bags for a quick disposable bib. Just pull & toss. How much easier could life get?
